4 Star IHIBRP Book Review: “Ember of the Planet (Ember’s Journey Book 1)

A Sweet/Clean Fantasy Romance!

Even as 18-year-old Ember loses her family and everything she loves, she must embark on a great quest dictated by her planet’s conqueror, the enigmatic Pathfinder, to develop her burgeoning magical powers so she can, in the end, fight him for the ultimate control of Otera and its inhabitants.

Author Dove Winters conjures a charming fantasy tale in “Ember of the Planet (Ember’s Journey Book 1)”—an other-worldly coming-of-age story about an innocent young woman selected by her planet to be its Guardian and Healer. She introduces an unlikely hero in the guise of Ember Oheada, hoping to turn her from Snow White to Xena Warrior Princess during the course of an expedition that introduces several male characters to act as mentors and possible romantic foils for Ember (female companionship is almost completely lacking), including her enigmatic assigned protector/captor, Aaron, for whom she holds a special attraction. The plotline naturally follows where the heroine foregoes, but sometimes feigns interest in other men, seeing ideal qualities in a brutish captor peer through his brutish demeanor that no one else can appreciate. Although the outcome of their relationship is somewhat predictable to those familiar with the trend of romantic novels, the employment of magic, humor, and a bit of swordplay somewhat enlivens the tale in this otherwise generic plotline.

Winters’ winsome narrative does stroll by at a steady pace as she takes Ember through her transformation from simple farm girl to budding global warrior, and although “Ember of the Planet” follows an all-too-familiar theme in fantasy romance novels, it does hold a few surprises in store—some of which the author keeps secret for the future of the series. All in all, this is a pleasant read lovers of sweet/clean romance novels will appreciate.
