“Asylum: A Story by Ian Lahey, Illustrated by Hauke Vagt” by Ian Lahey - IHIBRP 5-Star Book Review

A Macabre Children’s Tale Destined To Be A Classic!

Overview: Inspired by the illustrations of Hauke Vagt, Author Ian Lahey was compelled to write this short story about an asylum for unwanted children, a strange doctor, and a mystery at the core of it all.

It is no small wonder that the simplest reads always seem to present the most valuable lessons. Through their writing and artwork, Lahey and Vagt have seamlessly paired together to create the perfect union of dark humor, tragedy, and salvation in “Asylum”.

Lahey’s macabre short story translates each of Vagt’s images into an exploration of the mind of an unwanted child who learns that his parents have rejected him and placed him in an orphanage—of sorts, abandoning the boy and surrendering him for adoption. This children’s story may be quite succinct, but it is eloquent in its detail and high in impact.

The author covers some heavy childhood topics while demonstrating that things are not always what they seem. Lahey intricately examines and expands on Vagt’s imagery, putting his artwork into the simplest of words and concepts that, in most cases, would prove to be elusive in more wordy texts and tomes. The author’s interpretations of Vagt’s artwork expands into an unforgettable tale where physical and personality differences, shunning, acceptance, loneliness, self-esteem, friendship, family, and belonging are all brought to the forefront, then dealt with in a most unconventional manner, resulting in a most surprising outcome for both characters and readers alike.

Child, Teen, Adult, or Senior... If you read one short story that teaches self-love, tolerance, and acceptance to people of all genders, races, sexual orientations, religious persuasions, and ages, let it be “Asylum”. This short story is most certainly destined to be a children’s classic.

Congratulations to the author on this award-winning story! This novel will be permanently featured on my website at AuthorJBRichards.com under IHIBRP 5 Star Recommended Reads!
